This past Christmas, I had surprised K with a gift he totally did not expect… a shiny brand new Epson Stylus 2200 printer (good geek girlfriends give good geeky presents)! It was a gift so physically large that there was no way that I was going to wrap it and put it under the tree… so there it remained, in my car trunk, until Christmas.
On Christmas morning, I presented him with a small box containing a matte black ink cartridge for said printer. It took him a few seconds to realize what the present really was… oh, and what a priceless look on his face it was!
Fast forward a few days, and we are trying to figure out how to fit this large printer into our family room/office space in our home. There was no way he was going to fit the 2200 on his desk, so we either had to get another surface or work something ingenious out with our current resources.
We did a bit of both.
We have identical hutch-type office desks (I guess, your typical computer desk found at OfficeMax or whatever) residing in the room. The idea was to make, as, K so lovingly calls it, the überdesk… we pulled the hutch off of my desk and put it end to end with his desk, to create a long workspace for his multiple computers and the big-ass printer. It nicely filled the wall to make a seamless workplace.
I was now a geek without a desk.
We temporarily set my PowerBook on a small computer table… barely big enough to fit it with a few extra peripherals.
Fast forward to this weekend, and I am in desperate need of a decent desk. All of my crap (yes, crap) is lying all over the floors of the room and spilling over into the next. The lack of organization kills me. After much deliberation over the past few weeks, I settled on a custom configuration from the Container Store that took advantage of their current sale. A white melamine desktop and two sets of platinum mesh drawers for around $100. Yay! I love the fact that it’s reconfigurable, too.
All is right in the world again.
Well, except one more issue. I’ve been using a nice 21″ inch monitor that now dwarfs my new desk. I’ve been debating replacing it with a nice sleek LCD… sigh decisions, decisions…
